3.2 GPRS

General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) uses packet-based, rather than circuit-switched connections for mobile networks. GPRS is based upon the Global System for Mobile communications (GSM) and is used for services such as Short Message Service (SMS), Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) and also for access to Internet services, such as the web and email.

The future development of GPRS is likely to be in low cost Voice over IP made available in mobile phones.

The combination of GPRS with second generation (2G) cellular systems is commonly described as 2.5G to show that the technology is in between 2G and 3G.
