Wide Area Networks

LO3: Describe the characteristics and construction of Wide Area Networks

Learning Outcome 3 examines the characteristics of Wide Area Networks (WANs) and is divided into the following areas:

Basic concepts

  • types and characteristics of WANs including circuit, packet and cell-switched technologies
  • general routing and congestion control algorithms
  • routing, within the context of Internet Protocol
  • IP4 and IP6 technologies

PTO switched services

  • current public switched PTO services, including circuit-switched and packet-switched services.
