1. Introduction to Data Communications

Communication between humans has a long and varied history with the use of many different techniques and methods. These techniques and methods have been determined by circumstances and the available technology and range from the smoke signals of the Native Americans to Text Messaging on modern mobile phones.

Communication, including data communication, is concerned with the transmission, i.e. the sending and receiving, of information between two participants. In current terms this typically means sending information between devices that that are connected by physical wires or even radio links.


Think of at least two other examples of traditional communication, e.g. Morse Code, Semaphores, origin of the CND symbol, noonday guns, clocks chiming on the hour.
